Configure DNS to use for a Custom Domain

Custom Domain Setup

Last Updated: May 21, 2020

To enable a more integrated customer experience, the Boomtown Platform provides the ability to associate a custom domain name with your Knowledge Base. This can either be an entire website, or more commonly, a sub-domain of a website. For example, one can direct kb.mysite.com to point to the Knowledge Base configured on the Boomtown Platform so that your customers are presented with a more integrated experience.

How do I configure my DNS to use for a custom domain?
In order to setup a custom domain for your Knowledge Base, the DNS settings on the domain must be configured as well as the domain settings within the Boomtown Platform. In this example, we will be configuring support.example.com to point to our Boomtown Knowledge Base.

Domain DNS Settings Configuration
The first step is to configure a DNS record called a "CNAME" record that will point to the Boomtown servers. The location of your DNS settings will vary depending on the provider you use to manage your domain.

  1. Log into your domain provider such as GoDaddy.
  2. Navigate to the DNS settings.
  3. Add a CNAME record that points a name (sub-domain) to .kbsites.goboomtown.com (The dot at the beginning may not be required depending on your provider). For example, a CNAME record support for the domain example.com, with the value .kbsites.goboomtown.com will make support.example.com point to your Knowledge Base on Boomtown.
  4. Set a TTL for the record. This is how often the DNS servers around the world will check for updates to this record. Check with your domain provider on preferred values.
  5. Save changes. Please note that changes to DNS records can take up to an hour or more to propagate around the world.

Knowledge Base & Domain Pointing Setup on the Boomtown Platform
The second step is to let the Boomtown Platform know that you intend to direct a domain to your Knowledge Base.

  1. Log into the Boomtown Platform.
  2. Click on Knowledge Base on the navigation menu to the left side of the page.
  3. Under Select Knowledge Base, select the Knowledge Base that you would like to configure.
  4. Tap on the Settings gear to the left.
  5. Under KB URL, select the option for Custom Domain.
  6. Type in the domain that was configured for the CNAME record.
  7. Save changes.

If the settings are all correct on both the Boomtown Platform and the domain provider, the changes should be live within an hour.
